Ozone in a nutshell

Ozone (O₃) is activated oxygen, natures way of cleaning the air we breathe. It occurs naturally in the environment. Oxygen (O₂) generated by plant life is converted by ultraviolet radiation to ozone by binding a third oxygen atom to the normal two to form (O₃). Lightning also forms ozone during thunder storms. The fresh sweet smell in the air after a thunderstorm is the smell of ozone.

Ozone can be created on demand. By a ZOX ozone generator or ozonator that utilizes the oxygen produced by our plant life. This is achieved by utilizing high-frequency corona discharge principle to produce ozone just as lightning does during a large thunderstorm. This principle is the most powerful man-made modernization in the creation of activated oxygen or ozone (O₃). How it works

The weak bond holding ozone's third oxygen atom is what causes the molecule to be unstable and thus such an effective oxidizer. Because of this instability, an oxidation reaction occurs upon any collision between an ozone molecule and molecule of an "oxidisable" substance such as certain forms of iron and manganese, organic molecules, or microbes. In an oxidation reaction, energy transfers to the ozone molecule leaving a stable oxygen molecule (O₂) and a highly unstable oxygen atom (O₁). The molecule being oxidized then bonds with the loose (O₁) atom creating an oxide of the substance. This is then easily filtered out.

Ozone can be produced commercially in much the same way as in nature - through the use of a UV lamp or by an electrical Corona Discharge (CD). The primary difference between the two methods is the ozone output. UV ozone generation technology is becoming limited in its uses because of the low concentrations produced. CD technology on the other hand produces far higher concentrations. Overall, CD technology is much more efficient than UV due to the ability of the high voltage electrical corona discharge to split a greater number of oxygen molecules, thereby creating more ozone.

Ozone Myths busted

• Ozone will not totally eliminate chemical use in pools and spas. Some amount of residual chemical is still necessary since most of the ozone recombines back into oxygen before it reaches the pool. Thus some residual form of sanitization is still necessary.
  
  
• Ozone at correct doses does not attack the seals of the pump. Nor does it deteriorate the pool valet, filter, pipes, or the solar-roll solar heater.
  
  
• Ozone generators will not help the ozone in the atmosphere.
  
  
• Ozone and chlorine do not work against each other.
  
  
• Ozone does not do away with regular pool service.
  
  
• There is no such thing as bad ozone nature creates more ozone in polluted areas through altered light refraction (thus higher levels of ozone in highly polluted areas). This is a natural mechanism to oxidise pollutants in the air.
